In recent years an ever growing audience, here and abroad, has become aware of the rare, individual sound and depth of the playing of tenor saxophonist, Bob Kindred… "It’s fair to say that Kindred now ranks with the giants of his instrument, with Ben Webster, Sonny Rollins, Stan Getz, John Coltrane and Zoot Sims." "He expresses a kind of beauty and depth rarely heard…his beauty of tone is simply awesome." "Bob Kindred’s powerful, surging tenor is revelation. Where has this man been?… Absolutely astounding!" "The directness, the simplicity, the tone, the truth in his playing…I wish I could play Mozart like Bob Kindred plays jazz!" Kindred’s craft was first honed in his native Philadelphia working with organ trios led by Groove Holmes, Charles Earland and Shirley Scott. He then toured with several big bands including WOODY HERMAN’S THUNDERING NEW HERD. His commitment to the future of jazz led to his being a clinician/performer in the field of jazz education with the INTERNATIONAL ART OF JAZZ, FESTIVAL JAZZ and the SMITHSONIAN JAZZ REPERTOIRE COMPANY. In 1992 he was the recipient of a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts for a concert entitled "TO BEN AND JOHNNY, WITH LOVE", a tribute to Ben Webster and Johnny Hodges. The concert with chamber orchestra also featured jazz greats, bassist, Red Mitchell, drummer, Edmund Thigpen and reminiscences from Milt Hinton, all of whom had long histories with Hodges and Webster. Every Christmas Bob co-produces and appears in the annual performances of “Bending Towards the Light … A Jazz Nativity” for which he wrote the title song. Besides his own CDs he has been featured on many recordings with such singers as Little Jimmy Scott, Ian Shaw, Giacomo Gates, and M Mm , a duet CD with pianist Larry Willis and on other recordings with the Statesmen of Jazz and on Fantasy Record’s tribute to Ellington and Strayhorn. For the past six years the Bob Kindred Trio with John Hart on guitar and Steve LaSpina on bass, has played the Sunday Jazz Brunch at Café Loup on 13th Street. LIVE AT CAFÉ LOUP with guests Warren Vache, Wycliff Gordon and Tim Horner was recorded there. He recently re-released PLAYIN’ IN THE YARD, his quartet recording featuring Gene Buetoncini, Steve Gilmore and John Kaye. Much has been written about Bob’s sound and sensuality: “He has a big gorgeous sound oozing with a marvelous vibrato … just plain sexy!” “He expresses a kind of beauty and depth rarely heard … his tone is simply awesome” “He invests each note with passion”
